CTRL+SHIFT: Rebooting Digital Cultur
A dialogue on metadata, algorithmic ethics, and cultural sovereignty
At a time when digital infrastructures define what culture is seen, heard, and monetized, Gender Music Tech presents CTRL+SHIFT, a one-off session to rethink the role of data, algorithms, and autonomy in today’s cultural ecosystem.
Starting from a simple idea —digital systems are not neutral— this conversation invites us to collectively imagine how we might rebuild digital culture around data justice, metadata sovereignty, and urgent alternatives to the dominance of extractive tech.
Inspired by the recent European open letter on digital ethics and cultural rights, we’ll explore questions that cut across sectors:
Who controls the infrastructures that shape culture?
How do metadata affect visibility, access, and artistic recognition?
Can an algorithm correct the very inequalities it was trained to reinforce?
What role can cultural actors play in resisting the dominance of big tech?
This session is also a call to action: toward adopting open, ethical, and Europe-based digital tools, and toward rewriting cultural values not just as content, but as code.
🧩 We’ll explore gender metadata, feminist infrastructures, fediverse models, and what it means to design cultural systems from the margins. Because digital culture can be reimagined — and reclaimed.
